Motherhood in Light of Eternity
Eternity is something that’s been on my mind a lot lately. This world has become such a saddening place. Honestly, if I dwell on it, it kind of scares me to think my daughter has to grow up here. It can be hard, but I know I’m supposed to fix my eyes on what is unseen (2 Corinthians 4:18) Motherhood and eternity can seem to be conflicting sometimes. As a mom of a toddler I’m constantly reacting to the here and now. I feel like I’m constantly chasing around this little tornado, that’s running through my house overturning everything she encounters. Not that I’m complaining because she is a huge answered prayer (many many prayers) and I love motherhood, but its easy to get stuck in this mode where you feel like you’re barely able to breath let alone think about somethings that can seem so far off. That’s why I want to share why eternity matters for mothers and how it can even help you, well,..breathe.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Sense of Freedom:
This world will try and convince us that we need to worry about pretty much everything. Some examples of things that we can put on a pedestal as moms are education, health, and routines. I mean, yes, these are important things but they aren’t the most important and don’t really have eternal value. I’m not saying not to care about these things but my daughter is not even two and I’ve already felt completely bogged down by the worry associated with these things. Will she be ruined by watching tv, eating non organic food, or not having a consistent nap-time? When you can see passed the worlds agenda and have an eternal mindset you will find freedom. “..let us throw off everything that hinders..”
Focus and clarity:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Fixing our eyes on Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of faith…”
We have a race marked out for us. When we think about that we stop the comparisons, because we are focused on our race, our path. Following the path that God has marked out specifically for us, can make things a lot easier because we’re not trying to run anyone else’s race. We fix our eyes on Jesus and things aren’t magically perfect, but they are aligned with our path. When we compare and are focused on what others are doing or on the here and now, we’re going to meet tons of resistance and that is when we start to struggle.
“..And let us run with perseverance, the race marked out for us. Fixing our eyes on Jesus..”
It helps you make decisions:
Yes! You did read that right. I jokingly told my husband that after 8pm I can no longer make decisions. I just feel like I’m done by then and I have no more capacity at the end of the day to decide anything. When I’m focused on eternity though, it allows me to narrow down my process. Will this matter for eternity? — If its a discipline thing, yes. If its a food thing, probably not. For example, if she wants to have a cookie, okay she can have a cookie occasionally (I used to be so against this). When she is being defiant, that’s something that I want to invest time in training her heart because that can affect her eternity. I don’t have to overcomplicate or over think every decision. There are a lot of things the world values and will convince us are major, but if they don’t matter for eternity we don’t need to overthink it.
Inheritance waiting for us:
This is so important! In all the ways we feel undervalued, over worked, and unsatisfied in light of eternity they are all insignificant. We will be fully satisfied in a way we have never experienced. We will desire nothing. Our hearts will be fully filled with joy, peace, and love. This is where our hope should be God is enough and will be enough forever. This life is going to get us down. Our loved ones are going to let us down. We live in a dark fallen world but have something glorious waiting for us in heaven. “..For the joy set before him he endured the cross…” Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before him…eternity with God.
God Wants to Refine Me:
As I’ve said before, I love being a mom, but I’m honestly not that great at it. My house is usually messy, I waiver on my routine commitments, I’m constantly running late, I get super distracted by social media and there’s so much more. I look at other moms and its so easy to compare (but don’t do it!) and wish I had her set of skills, or her discipline, or her patience, or her diligence, or her wisdom. That can make me feel hopeless, like I should check out or overwhelmed like I should be where they are but I can’t find my way there. When I think about eternity, I realize this life is to refine me for eternity with God. I’m being sanctified through these struggles. I am a work in progress and this is part of that process. These shortcomings also help me see Gods incredible grace.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3
Motherhood in Light of Eternity:
Motherhood in light of this life looks a lot different than motherhood in light of eternity. I hope this encourages you to keep your perspective in tune with our eternal God. There is so much more to life than what we see, for us and our families. Our world will try to distract us and get us to focus on this life now. This is why we need the word and we need each other! I’m so thankful for you guys! Tell me, how does having an eternal mindset help you? Did any one of these stand out to you?
